Clorox Company and Hidden Valley Ranch
Though The Clorox Company is most widely known for household bleach products, the company is now a diversified manufacturer of a variety of household consumer products including insecticides, cat litter, kitchen cleaners and food products. The Clorox Company markets to over 70 countries in addition to the United States, and approximately 16 % of the company’s sales revenue is achieved via internationally based marketing. Though continuing to maintain market share in the household cleaning products arena, the company also maximizes market channels to the specialized industrial, professional and food service industries. German-based Henkel KGaA currently owns about 28 % of the The Clorox Company.
In the early 1970s, The Clorox Company first entered the grocery products industry with its initial acquisition of McFadden Industries, the company that makes the Litter Green brand of cat litter. The same year, The Clorox Company acquired Grocery Store Products Company, a company that manufactured specialty foods like Cream of Rice cereal, B&B mushrooms, and Kitchen Bouquet. In 1972, The Clorox Company added the popular line of Hidden Valley Ranch to this operation by buying Hidden Valley Ranch Food Products. The Hidden Valley Ranch company produced popular party dips and salad dressings.
Hidden Valley Ranch Original Salad Dressing, a best-selling supermarket brand salad dressing, was first created as a take-home gift for visitors to the Hidden Valley Ranch - a dude ranch in Santa Barbara, California. The salad dressing made of mayonnaise, buttermilk and an assortment of dry herbs, quickly became so popular by word of mouth, that the creators of the recipe decided to market and sell the product in the mid 1960s. In 1972, the creators of the original Hidden Valley Ranch dressing recipe, Steve and Gayle Henson, sold the brand to The Clorox Company. Since the 1972 purchase, The Clorox Company has grown the brand into a hugely successful and internationally recognized entity.

Hidden Valley Mine
New Guinea is the world’s second largest island and is less than 50 miles north of Australia. The island is divided into two parts, the western part that belongs to Indonesia and the eastern part that is an independent country. This eastern part is known as Papua. On the southeastern side is one of the world’s newest mines, the Hidden Valley mine.
This mine is scheduled to open in the middle of 2009. Extensive ore samples were taken and analyzed in 2008 paving the way for full operations. The mine will be operated under a joint venture agreement between Harmony and an Australian company, Newcrest mining company. This joint venture, which covers all of the mining activities in the ore rich Morobe Providence, will operate under the name Morobe Mining Joint Ventures.
Harmony produced over one and a half million ounces of gold last year making it one of the leading producers in the world. Located in South Africa, they operate many below ground and surface mining operations along with the Hidden Valley facility. When the Hidden Valley Mine is in full production, it will produce a quarter of a million ounces of gold and four million ounces of silver each year. Gold production will peak at 275,000 ounces per year and the life of the mine is expected to last fourteen years.
There will be two open pit mines. One will be a large pit in the Hamata orebody and a second larger pit that will mine the Hidden Valley orebody. Since this is such a rich area for mining, it is possible that subsequent, close proximity mines will be added to the operation extending Hidden Valley’s life cycle.
Extensive work has been completed on site. After delays due to rainy weather, work is progressing at a rapid rate. Construction of permanent structures to house the employees has been completed. The housing unit can accommodate up to 800 employees. By the end of 2008, the overall project was 57% done.
Their have been challenges obstructing the completion of the project. There is a shortage of civil engineering and labor available which has slowed the project. In addition, costs have risen from an estimated total expense of 542 million dollars to a now estimated final cost of 605 million dollars. These issues will dictate how quickly the construction can be completed. Once completed, Hidden Valley will be a top gold mine.
The Hidden Valley Kings Gang
The Hidden Valley Kings Gang got its start in the Charlotte, NC area in the early 1990’s, taking their name from the neighborhood they chose as an ideal place from which to grow their drug trafficking business. Bordered on the east by Tyron Street and on the west by Sugar Creek Road, and with both roads connecting to I-85 to the north, Hidden Valley neighborhood provided the easy access vital to a thriving drug trade.
Throughout the 1990’s and into 2000, the Hidden Valley Kings Gang was locally known in the Charlotte area for their gang activity, but it wasn’t until March 27, 2007, when the U.S. Department of Justice issued a 48-count Indictment against the gang for drug trafficking charges, that the Hidden Valley Kings Gang finally made a name for themselves.
The Indictment, filed March 27 and unsealed three days later, charged 20 gang members, along with their associates, with conspiring to divide the neighborhood into territories to control drug sales of cocaine, crack, pot and ecstasy. It alleged that the members would require dealers to pay a block “tax” to be able to sell drugs in the Kings’ “territory.” The Indictment further stated that the gang operated a “hierarchy” in which its top leaders were “Original Kings,” the next level of leaders were called “Original Gangsters” and leaders below that were known as “Baby Gangsters.”
Between December 9 and 11, 2008, all the remaining members of the gang named in the original indictment, who did not enter into previous plea bargaining agreements, were sentenced on charges of drug conspiracy and/or drug distribution and federal firearms charges. The gang’s oldest member, Roscoe Abell, who earlier entered into a plea bargain in July, received a sentence of 20 years, with 50 years of supervised release.
